"Cape Flattery"

"G Wagon in Paradise"
"Backyard Irises"
Backyard Irises is the first in the series. I had just had my yard hardscaped and got a mix of iris rhizomes from a neighbor the year before, so I was excited to see them thriving in the sun. As my first foray into Fauvism, this came together quick and I enjoyed the different ways of showing how the sun alters the colors.

"Garage Irises"
Garage Irises follows the same idea but they’re next to my garage. I enjoyed playing around with how to depict the sunlight spots from it shining through my fence.
"Self Portrait"
My teacher challenged me, “What do you want your next painting to be?” And I said, “Well, I’ve always wanted a portrait of myself…” and here we are. If you were to come to my house, you would recognize the chair; if you saw me during the holiday season, you’d recognize the dress.
Initially, we talked about doing versions after Gustav Klimt, John Singer Sargent, Kehinde Wiley, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Since I am slow and have also never studied portraiture, the final version ended up being its own animal with touches and influences of the four masters. The final version doesn’t really look like any of them, but they definitely inspired me to get to the finish line. I have been told by people who know me that it depicts my essence and that on the outside, with my spiky shoes, shiny metals, etc, they cover the fast that I am a soft, kind, sweet person that you can see in my relaxed pose and dreamy expression.

"Upcountry Maui"
Inspired by a painting I took in Maui, Upcountry Maui depicts a vista in Kula, which is upcountry Maui, a lush, green paradise. It is right by Grandma’s Coffee before the road to Hana starts, a destination I recommend for the coffee and views.
This was my second landscape I painted and I remember struggling so hard with the shadows. I had also switched to oil paints from acrylics; most of the painting was done in acrylic but then I felt like it looked too flat so I painted more layers in oil to give it more depth and I am really happy with how it turned out. I can’t tell you how excited I was when the shadows clicked and how much I loved putting in those bright dots of sunshine.
"Tulips Fields"
Inspired by a photo I took during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, I gave this one a dramatic sky to contrast with the bright flowers. I remember my teacher telling me to build up the tulips more and that included reds, oranges, pinks, and yellows. I had a visceral, negative reaction to all the orange, but by the time I finished, this ended up being my favorite landscape to date.

FAQs
Once I actually finish (1-3 months) and ship your artwork, it’ll probably take 3-5 days to arrive if you’re in the continental US. You’re also at the mercy of whatever carrier is delivering it and whatever weather conditions are happening, so ultimately I defer to that but will provide tracking information once received.
No refunds, but if you don’t sign off on it before shipping, then I will keep it.
I will set up a video call to talk to you about your car and learn about it, where you live, what sort of landscapes appeal to you, etc. I will need photos of the car posed how we decide it will be in the commission, and possibly landscape photos if there’s an important place that appeals to you.
I will do a mock up that includes old fashioned cutting and pasting the car into the landscape and working up some colors with oil pastels and sending that off to you before beginning your masterpiece.
Right now I am just focused on building out my series of the cars in the landscapes because I am just so inspired by that!
Is this a trick question…? In your home, you can hang anything, anywhere, so of course I believe that any interior or style is perfect for your painting.
Some cool places that I can foresee hanging your artwork might be in the garage where the car is kept (assuming it’s dry and preferably heated) or maybe your home office. I have mine of Jean Pierre hanging in my bedroom.
